“Petty Things is the only solo write on this entire record. Although this record lives in the world of indie-pop, I identify first and foremost as a singer-songwriter, and the record needed a moment where my lyrics and melodies stood alone. Even after full band shows, people will come up to me and say that my acoustic songs were their favourite moments.
I’d come home from a lackluster writing session and was sitting on my living room floor, messing around on guitar and scrolling on my phone. A friend had posted about their divorce, and how they were “consciously uncoupling”. It made me think of my parents’ own amicable (but still devastating) divorce when I was a kid. From that moment, the song literally poured out of me in half an hour. I wanted to capture a kind of subtler pain that many breakup songs don’t touch—when something slowly fizzles, when there’s still love, when maybe you aren’t sure that ending is the right thing but you know you can’t stay.
I’ve played this song at every show for the past year, and there’s a beautiful sing-a-long part at the end of each chorus that always gives me goosebumps. It’s already a crowd favourite. My producer Ryan Stewart and I intentionally kept the production minimal and intimate, because it feels like such a live performance song to me.”
